The House of Refuge in Bulgaria is a project founded by a dear friend and former employee of Eternal Threads, Miriam Lieway, and a Bulgarian native, Nina Savova. Their mission is to assist girls “at risk” in finding hope and a future by developing life skills to help them reach their full potential as a valuable part of their society.
Currently, the House of Refuge team reaches out to a state-run home for delinquent youth and teaches the girls (ages 12-19) how to embroider bookmarks. These girls are victims of sexual abuse and forced prostitution and are at risk of being trafficked into the sex industry in Western Europe when they leave the home. Poverty, domestic violence and lack of education have made them especially vulnerable to traffickers. A house has been remodeled for the girls to have a safe place to continue their education and receive vocational training.
